So kerdjan?

Diri, diri, so kerdjan is one of my favorite romani songs. I've heard several versions of it, though the Romanyi Rota interpretation is my favorite.
One website explains, "The song tells a tragic tale of jealousy gone wild" but I cannot find the lyrics anywhere. I want to perform to this, but not without understanding it. I can pick out a word here or there, but I can't make out full sentences. Does anyone have a copy of the lyrics, or, better yet, a translation of the lyrics into english?

Thank you!!!!

DJ wanted for eclectic gypsy inspired monthly

I throw a monthly at Amnesia that features live performances (one man bands, accordion players, chanteuses, burlesque queens, belly dancers, clowns, ect.). We end the last couple of hours with a DJ who can get the crowd dancing. We've been very pleased to work with DJ Zeljko of Kafana Balkan, DJ Felina (featured in this months issue of seven by seven), and Soul Sallam. We are currently looking to discover some new talent to add to our wonderful DJ rotation. While we'd like a strong balkan element, we are an eclectic night that features many types of music from different eras and continents; prohibition era, punk, middle eastern, and equatorial beats included. If you think you might be the right fit for our night, please contact me here on tribe.

Annual balkanian rroma dance workshop in Serbia

I inform you that another summer intensif rroma dance workshop will take place in Belgrade, Serbia in august 2008:

***** ANNUAL SERBIAN BALKANIAN RROMA DANCE WORKSHOP *****

Belgrade, August 1st to 7th, 2008

As each year, Simona Jovic will welcome you in her country for a 20 hours rroma and balkanian dance workshop. The workshop will be teached by Simona Jovic, Dobrosav Grocic and live musicians. Join us to learn more about how to dance on the rromani and traditionnal music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The workshop will be teached in english, french and serbian.

* Dance programme :

Cocek rroma dance from Southern Balkans
The biggest part of this 20 hours serbian workshop will be dedicated to this gracefull and joyfull dance, danced in the rromani communities in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and south of Serbia. Danced by women and men, it remains very oriental with the big turkish influences thanks to the 5 centuries ottoman occupation of that area.

Vranjanska svita (with the tamburine)
Vranjanska svita is a dance and song from Vranje in south of Serbia. It is composed of three parts : first women dance part on the beautifful song "Sano duso" (7/8 rhythme). Second, the men dance called "Tesko oro". And the third part is the women cocek rromani dance danced with the tambourine on the 9/8 very fast rhythme. It is the most oriental of all traditionnal serbian dances and one the most beautifull.

Rromani Oros
Cercle or line dances from south of the Balkans. According to the rhythme, if it's regular or irregular, if it's 7/8 or 9/8, if it's slow or fast, the step of the oro will change. In this workshop will be teached only those danced by the Rroma in their mariages and festivities.

Serbian kolo
Kolo is the synonym for oro, also a cercle or line dance, but this appelation is used in Central Serbia and it is mostly assimilated to the "two bite rhytme kolos" and not the "oriental" ones. Lively and friendly, kolo is the dance of sharing between Gadje and Rroma that will give you the liberty to have fun at any balkanian festivity.

Hey everyone... I was wondering if anyone could help me out here... I'm looking for the meaning or lyrics to the song "Sandala", sometimes called "Duj Sandale". Fanfare Ciocarlia plays it on two of their albums - Queens and Kings and Gili Garabdi. I figured this would be the best place to ask! Thank you in advance! :D

Hi all, I'm living in a suburb of Delhi at the moment, and really really want to learn Rajasthani dance while I'm in India! I want to go to one of the gypsy tribes in Rajasthan, I've heard of the Kalbelya tribe, but dont know where to go to organise a stay/workshops with them. I would rather not book with a travel agent, I want to pay the dancers directly for their hard work! Can anyone give me any information? Im hoping to take a long weekend from work and stay for around 3 days, any advice would be greatly appreciated - thanks :)

Song lyrics - Vlatko Stefanovski

I have loved Stefanovski's "Gipsy Song" for quite a while - his CD has multiple version of the beautiful melody, but my favorite is the one with the singing. There are two versions of the sung lyrics on his album - one in Macedonian, to which I have found lyrics, and one in another language which may be rromanes (I only speak a little, and I don't recognize any of the words being sung except for "mange" "devla" "dives" and "manush" - but maybe I am mishearing those words when they are really something else... I don't know).

Anyway, I recently saw a very beautiful choreography to this song, and would like to know how much the gestures the dancer used match up to the meaning of the song.

Does anyone know where to find the lyrics to this song? A translation would be wonderful, but if I can get the lyrics in rromanes, I'm willing to puzzle it out myself as best I can.

Parrik tute for any help!

Hello to you all! I am new here and just wanted to introduce myself. I know practically NOTHING about Gypsy music, although I want to know a lot. I have been told my grandfather was "a Gypsy" (I never met him...he died before I was born). I heard that he used to play the violin...and he also was a gymnast! I have enjoyed Gypsy jazz....like Django...and I LOVE the new CD I got from Putumayo: "Gypsy Groove Balkan beats and gypsy jams from the dance floors of Eastern Europe and beyond." I am beginning to know and love the group Gogol Bordello, too!

But I want to know so much more...like I said. Can anyone recommend a CD for me, to start me on a "Gypsy Music Education"?

P.S. I like to dance!

HUNGARIAN GYPSY MUSIC IN FRANCE

In France, organizers don't choose one gypsy band by their nationality. It means that all french gypsy bands or bands already on the french territory are more lucky to get concerts. That is to say that gypsies from abroad are rarely taken into account. One organizer making only one concert per year of gypsy music will not choose a band from abroad.
This is understandable but this is a pity because gypsy culture is so rich.

Do you think that in foreign countries, people make more difference between gypsies and their nationality or gypsies and the traditional music of the country they sat ?
The Romani non-profit organization, Voice of Roma’s “Romani Routes” program.

Romani Routes is a project of Voice of Roma, a nonprofit organization based in Sebastopol, California. The aim of Romani Routes is to present the virtuosity of Romani musicians and the richness and depth of Romani music in a way that counteracts the hype of the mythologized “Gypsy”. It is routine for presenters of sensationalized “Gypsy” music and even traditional Romani music to surround those performances with half-truths and stereotypes about Roma and Romani culture. Furthermore, in an atmosphere of rampant prejudice and unfair discrimination against Roma, far too many presenters exploit Romani musicians unjustly. Voice of Roma, through Romani Routes, seeks to lead the way out of this situation by ensuring connections among the musicians, Romani culture, and the cause of Romani rights.

UPCOMING RROMA MUSIC, DANCE AND LANGUAGE TOURS ORGANIZED BY SIMONA JOVIC
In the heart of the rroma villages of Rajasthan and Macedonia

RAJASTHAN - INDIA (January 14th to 21st, 2008)
Dancing the kalbelya dance with the rajasthani nomad dancers and musicians

It has been now a long time since I've been taking you each year to the heart of Rajasthan to meet this extraordinary cast of nomad musicians, dancers and snake charmers living in the Thar desert. They are nomad, each year I have to find their new camp location and it is always a big joy to find it. As always, it is going to be a several days workshop with these dancers and musicians, as always it is going to be a wonderfull human aventure, a warm welcom in their village (a very bi privilege) and of course a small performance improvised only for us. If you want to go back to the origins of Rroma people and their dances, this is a trip to do.
Gypsy String Orchestra?

I'm currently involved in a project in which I'm posting my grandfather's 1924 diary to a blog, one day at a time, and annotating each entry with as much historical research as I can find. (It's at http://papasdiary.blogspot.com.) He was very into listening to the radio, and several times he mentions how excited he was to hear an ensemble called "The Gypsy String Orchestra." I'd love to find out more about them; does anyone out there know where I might find some early recordings of or other information about The Gypsy String Orchestra?

Write to Bumbershoot: Support Gogol Bordello and DeVotchKa!

Hey friends,

You might already know that I'm a big environmentalist and usually rally behind much more pressing issues, but today I'm taking a break from that to focus on something truly tragic...

I just found out Bumbershoot scheduled Gogol Bordello and DeVotchKa at the SAME TIME! IDIOTS! So to combat it, please send the following message to their email address *and* post it as a myspace comment:

email: info@onereel.org
myspace: http://www.myspace.com/bumbershoot

text:
---------------------

Dear Bumbershoot Schedule Master,

I am HUGELY DISAPPOINTED by your decision to schedule DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello in competitive time slots, on Saturday evening September 1st. Please reconsider! They share a large fan base who would greatly appreciate back-to-back performances from these two excellent bands. Neither comes to Seattle frequently and due to your contract limitations will not be allowed to play another venue in town during this trip. I know several people who would not otherwise go to the festival, but who are attending Bumbershoot this year specifically to see these two bands. At least a few of them are now reconsidering their attendance.

Please RESCHEDULE DeVotchKa and Gogol Bordello for the SAME STAGE so their fans can enjoy both of these rare and most excellent performances.

---------------------

Thanks!
Amy

I am interested in taking over as the new moderater. I would also like to change the name of this Tribe to Roma Music.
The word Gypsy is a derogatory word to the Romany peoples. I would rather use a term that is respectful.
My name is Raymond AKA Paintdragon

Simona Jovic
Dances of the Rroma
www.simonajovic.com

Dear friends,

I am leaving in a few days to Serbia, to see my family, to see my Rroma friends
and of course, prepare everything for the Serbian rromany music and dance tour
that I organise in august. A lot of people contacted me for this trip and I am
very happy to see that people are finally opened to visit these countries ad to
meet Rroma as they are! They will be very happy to welcome everyone who is truly
interested in their culture. So if you wish to join us for this trip, please let
me know as soon as possible. I prepared for you a lot of fun : dancing with the
rroma musicians, going out to some very funny places, cultural visits and of
course a stay in Guca during the famous Guca brass band rromany festival.
There, we will have the great Demiran Cerimovic (Rroma from south of Serbia, the
last year's winner) playing just for us! This trip will take place between
August 5 and 13, 2007.

For those who can't come to Serbia and wish to hear Demiran Cerimovic, it is
possible in july in Western Europe! We will be playing in Belgium (for the
national hollidays) and France (Escoeuilles first and at Avignon Festival
then). We still have a date available between july 15th and 19th. If you would
like to invite us, here is your chance to do it without paying the travel
costs! We present together the rromany music and dances from the Balkans. Nine
musicians and myself (singing and of course dancing).

And finally, I decided not to continue teaching for a long time anymore. I have
other plans and finally, these dances are difficult to teach. How to explain to
people something they you don't explain, that you feel only? But I still have a
few upcoming workshops, the next one is Athens where I will be teaching the rromany dance from Rajasthan and Egypt and then in Paris on june 23 and 24.. I will teach 4
differents workshops, rroma dances from Rajasthan, Turkey, Serbia and Central Europe. You are welcome to book your places.

For any information, you can contact me at contact@simonajovic.com

Devlesa,

Rumen Shopov teaches at Kosmos Camp...

Check out the website:

www.kosmoscamp.com

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the luxuries of Saratoga Springs Resort, nestled just over 2 hours north of both San Francisco and Sacramento in 260 private acres of forest. Miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of nearby Clearlake and access to natural mineral springs, surround a pair of lodges with both indoor sleeping accommodations and clean camp grounds, complete with a spacious pool and large jacuzzi. All meals are provided by our professional chef and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the immaculate Heart Lodge, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

Call to Austin Texas Hand Drummers for 1st Thursday show

Hi All,

WyldeFyre Productions puts on a live show every 1st Thursday at Amy's Ice Cream on Far South Congress. The next show is April 5, 2007. The event opens at 6 with fire spinning classes, then belly dancing performances, then we have fire dancing performances & then we have open performance with live drumming & dancing (all types). We need live drummers (all style welcome - middle eastern is great for the belly dancers, african for the fire dancers, etc) & dancers (belly dancers, fire dancers or other ethnic dancers are all wanted). Please feel free to email me at AmberBarbara@hotmail.com or here within Tribe - Austin - AmberBarbara for more information.

I hope the drummers can make it out with us. Live drumming makes the show for me!

Ethnic Drumming & Dancing exhibitions/performances will also be considered.

Thanks in advance,

AmberBarbara

Instructional Middle Eastern music CD and guitar tablature

Hi everyone!

If you or a loved one are interested in learning traditional Middle Eastern music and the rhythms that accompany those songs, well look no further!

Carmine Guida and I (Melissa Murphey) have recorded an instructional CD that has 12 plain straightforward songs that will enable drummers or musicians to learn to play the traditional tunes.

This CD includes such classics as Layla, Misirlou, Shisheler, Fire Dance and Sulukule. There are no distracting vocals or excessive ornamentation here, just the plain songs for learning purposes. The MP3s are available for immediate download at www.dorku.com. they are only 1 dollar each!

All soundfiles are in the same key as the sheet music available at www.dorku.com.

In addition, GUITAR TABLATURE is now available for select Middle Eastern songs at www.dorku.com. Sheet music is available for key of C instruments, B flat instruments (trumpet, clarinet , soprano and tenor sax) and Bass clef instruments (cello, trombone, baritone)

www.dorku.com - for all your Middle Eastern Music needs!

...see the list of dates below...

here's what the LA Weekly recently had to say about them...
"The Bay Area's Fishtank Ensemble are the rompin', stompin' leaders of cross-pollinated Gypsy music.

French fiddler Fabrice Martinez paid dues gigging Europe in a mule- drawn caravan, including stints in Romani villages. The man known as El Douje is the master of 21st-century flamenco guitar, while Aaron Seeman is the king of punk accordion. Audience
eyes tend to focus on Ursula Knudsen, not only for her virtuosic saw playing and a voice that sings in octaves not yet invented, but also for her sensual beauty. The mix also includes a Japanese shamisen player and a rock- bottom upright bassist, and we have a young band that is one of the most thrilling live acts on the planet." - LA Weekly

Everyone's going to Zlatne Uste's Golden Festival this weekend, (Friday and Saturday the 12 and 13) right? I'd be going even if my band, Djinn, weren't playing there. Check out the amazing schedule:
http://www.zlatneuste.org/
Lots of gypsy music, plus lots of Balkan, Middle Eastern, etc.

Those of you with a literary bent can read my blog about last year's festival:

I never really took the time to study Django or any of his proteges. Tower Records is going out of business so I am taking advantage of the low prices. Putumayo's Gypsy Caravan cd has just introduced me to Django's violinist, Stefan Grapelli. Has anyone seen Latcho Drom and can you confirm the names of Django's line up there? They appear in the credits but are hard to see for me. I think Stefan was there as well as Thierry Robin and Coco Brial? Any Django fanatics here? This music is so fast and joyful. I will try to watch the credits some more to see if I can make out the names.

Art SF is looking for some gypsy / roma style musicians and bands for benefit. We are an all volunteer group of artists, musicians, and performers raising money to buy a warehouse and create a new community art center. Our current space is at 110 Capp St. For more info about us check out our tribe page. There are some Balkan music specialists organizing this event. DJ Zeljko will be mixing Balkan music from Saban Baramovic to Boban Markovic. Part of the funds raised will go to help the Hleb i Sir Cirkus (Bread and Cheese Circus) who go to Kosovo and make free circus shows for Serbian and Roma refugee children. Next summer they will go on their 5th annual trip to Kosovo.

This recent sad news from Greece:
http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/10/23/news/roma.php
made me realize that I've never heard Greek Rom music, although I've heard lots of great Turkish Rom music. Can anyone recommend any good Greek Rom recordings? Or places in Greece to hear good bands? Apparently, not the demolished neighborhoods described in this article.

KAL Romany Band from serbia now on US Tour

Featured Music Preview
9/21/2006

Kal
Serbs from the Urbs

Writer: MANNY THEINER
info@steelcitymedia.com

Dragan Ristic is more than happy to ride the bandwagon of interest in Balkan-influenced punk (Gogol Bordello, Devotchka) and Eastern European brass bands that’s sweeping through hipster circles from Brooklyn outward. Just don’t tar Ristic, or his acclaimed band Kal, with the term “gypsy.” A resident of Belgrade, and Serbia’s stark apartment blocs, he would prefer to see the word become politically incorrect.

“In the Romani language, the word doesn’t exist. We call ourselves Rom,” he explains, “like Americans call themselves American. To 90 percent of the world’s population, the term ‘gypsy’ is pejorative — it means dirty and untouchable. And another reason: In 1971 in London, the Romani International Union decided on our flag, our anthem, and our official name. So that’s what should be used.”

He also believes that a united Europe isn’t taking Romani culture as seriously as it should. “Europeans aren’t conscious of how important Romani are for their culture. Cervantes, Garcia-Lorca, Bartok, Pushkin and others used Roma issues and themes as central in their books or music. And don’t forget about Bizet’s Carmen. We deserve to have a place in European culture.”

That said, Ristic’s not surprised that electronica stars Basement Jaxx released the Gypsy Beats and Balkan Bangers compilation, then incorporated its influence on their recent Crazy Itch Radio album. And don’t get the impression that the current craze for Romani style is anything new, either, he stresses — and we’re not just talking about the Gypsy Kings. “In the ’70s in Russia, Roma music was very prominent. During the ’60s, Serbian director Alexander Petrovic won first prize in Cannes with Roma themes in The Buyer of Feathers. Now, with the new wave again emphasizing Romani culture, it’s time to use it for our own rights.”

Ristic thinks the preservation of Romani culture is so important that he runs a summer program (Amala Summer School, near his home village of Valjevo) to teach Roma language, music and history to people from all over the world. His brother Dushan, who co-founded Kal (which means “black” in Romani but “good” or “correct” in Greek) has since retired from the band and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area as a professional painter, but returns to Serbia each summer to help out. “You need some kind of music skill,” Ristic explains. “Students stay two weeks in our houses. We bring them to weddings and baptisms, we show them Serbian historical monuments, and we welcome them to the Romani ghetto.”

Much like his urbanized countrymen, Ristic loves modern pop music, from B.B. King and Deep Purple to Manu Chao and Lambchop. And adaptability is a hallmark of the Roma people, so Kal’s new album straddles the line between “world beat” and traditional strains. But don’t get Ristic started on the flagrant abuse of electronic keyboards.

“In the Balkans during the ’90s, when the Communist regime fell down, moral values were destroyed, and it showed up in the music. [Romani] started to use ’80s keyboards, and the arrangements and lyrics were cheap, bad and kitsch. If you were living in Serbia, you couldn’t avoid hearing it. I think that I’m doing this in a proper way because I belong to this generation and it’s natural for me. It’s a matter of aesthetics.”

While refreshingly free of cheesy synths, Kal boasts its share of electronic rhythms, melding Balkan melodies on violin, guitar, accordion, brass — and irresistible percussion — with bhangra, hip hop and drum and bass, courtesy of producer Mike Nielsen, who’s worked with Underworld, Jamiroquai and Natacha Atlas. With a bit of Middle Eastern mystery, and freshness of beats from the street, it’s easy to picture Kal whipping any young crowd into a dancing frenzy.

Kal’s German-based record label, Asphalt Tango, specializes in Roma music, which could be an asset if it recognizes the growing potential of the “alternative” Roma genre, says Ristic. But he may find more success with stateside labels. “Americans know better than Europeans that this is a business. I would like to make Roma music closer to the mainstream, but in a natural way — instead of Buena Vista Social Club, there could be a Roma Vista Social Club,” he says. “It’s just a question of working hard on it, good publicity, and good fortune.”

And good luck, perhaps?

Kal. 10 pm. Fri., Sept. 22. Gooski’s, 3117 Brereton St., Polish Hill. $8. 412-681-1658

URGENT news from Sulukule, Turkey - Demolition of Historic Romani Neighborhoods in Istanbul

Sulukule Roma Culture Development and Solidarity Association.

Letters of support for the association and opposition to the demolition of the Sulukule mahalas in Istanbul may be addressed here:

Roma in Istanbul: Sulukule Press Release
Roma_in_Turkey@yahoogroups.com, 27.06.2006

We, the 3,500 Romani people of these mahalles of Neslisah and Hatice Sultan in the municipality of Fatih, Istanbul wish to tell you about the circumstances affecting our historic community as a result of the municipality's project to "renew the city". This project will result in the demolition of this historic neighborhood, and destroy the Romani community that lives here.

In October 20005 the local authority considered measures to redevelop the area, but from a range of choices they adopted the decision to demolish the existing housing, where large numbers of Romani people have lived for centuries since their first arrival in this area in the eleventh century. This decision was adopted without consultation with the community, nor any of the community representatives nor indeed the cooperation of the all parties represented on the local municipality. The decision is one that neither reflects the result of any feasibility study carried out by the municipal authorities and made public, nor seems based upon careful research about the possible options and implications of any measures to redevelop the area. Since this decision was taken, there have been a number of meetings between members of the community and the municipality, but without any resolution to the concerns raised by the Romani people for their future. The planned programme of demolition remains in place and work is expected to begin in September, when bulldozers will move in to the area.

The community of the Sulukule mahalles (Neslisah and Hatice Sultan), are the descendants of Romani people that arrived a thousand years ago in the then Byzantine capital, Constantinople. Their presence is recorded in sources that tell us that they lived in black tents, practicing fortune-telling, bear leading and music and dance for the residents of the city. Whilst the bear-leading and fortune-telling are a thing of the past these days, the music and dance remain part of the Romani culture that is still a vibrant and essential expression of Romani identity here. When the city fell to the Ottoman conquerors in 1453, it was the Sulukule Gate that first was breached, and many of the canons and other artillery were forged by the contingents of Romani metal-workers and smiths of the Ottoman army. This area, and its association with Romani communities through history is the reason why the community is asking for the decision to demolish the area to be rescinded, and a programme of regeneration and urban renewal be considered instead. This area represents the oldest Romani community in the world, with the most consistent occupation by Romani people in a tradition that stretches back through time to the earliest days of Romani history.

It is also the history of Romani people that is in this particular instance, concrete and palpable. So often the history of the Romani people has remained unrecorded or unrecognized except for the odd reference in non-Romani sources to their presence in cities and towns, to their occupations and trades in the streets and countryside, and to their persecution in punitive laws and ordinances that in some places and times meant appalling punishment or even death was meted out for the crime of merely being a "Gypsy". The Romani history of Sulukule remains to be further researched and written, but it is there in the actual buildings, streets and stones of the area, and in the faces of the people who live there. Their stories, and the stories of their families that go back generations are the history of the area in their physical forms, in the human presence of the "Egyptians" of the past, and the Romanies of the present.

The community have been offered the opportunity to receive small compensation for their loss of home and shelter, but the cost of buying new property, even for those that own their current abode is prohibitive in the the new apartment blocks that the developers will erect. The question of title deeds and legal claims to these properties also raises problems, as many of the families that live in the area have none, and is very similar to these problems that have arisen in Serbia, Bosnia and elsewhere in south eastern and central Europe when Romani communities have been threatened with removal. The community have organized a new foundation to represent them and speak with a certain voice, and it is their desire to see this lack of title and deeds addressed, and to see the renewal of their community, not its destruction.

With careful consultation and planning the possibilities exist to see the improvement of the area and its growth as a heritage centre for both Romani and non-Romani audiences alike, offering traditional Romani music and dance, and new opportunities for employment and training. The establishment of an equestrian centre, for example, that could provide stabling for the animals currently in the area, work for stable hands and trainers, transport for the tourists in the city that could experience riding in a phaeton through the old historic centers of Istanbul, and pony trekking into the Belgrade forest could all go towards regenerating an area in need of such opportunities, and the training of young Romani people in such would allow them to develop skills and experiences that have been part of the Romani way of life for centuries. The future development of horse-drawn transport, not merely for the tourist trade but also as an environmentally friendly approach to the movement of people in the city (in horse-drawn trams for example), could bring opportunities for developing self-sufficiency and economic viability in ways that were sustainable. Such ideas could be the beginnings of a discussion about the community and its future that would provide a more harmonious resolution to the current situation.

Support for such regeneration and urban renewal must come from the municipality and their efforts to secure funds for such initiatives from the EU. Such initiatives could also develop model working practices and approaches that placed Istanbul at the forefront of community partnership programmes, providing an example that could be followed throughout Turkey and Europe. Establishing a continuing dialogue with the people of Sulukule, developing consultative practices that demonstrate consensual processes in the management of planning, renewal and regeneration could demonstrate to all the benefits of such a programme and such an approach.

The social and health problems that are part of the daily struggle for Romani families in this community are in need of urgent measures to alleviate them - poverty is a reality for the majority of the residents and since the closure of the music and entertainment establishments in the area in the last ten years, the impact upon the community has immeasurably increased these problems. Less than one in ten of the adult population has any kind of work on a regular basis, and none have secure employment that would provide security for their families. Employment is a problem because of the wide-spread stigmatization of the community and its inhabitants. The lack of sufficient documentation means that most of the residents are not able to secure the so-called "green card" that would entitle them to basic state support and health-care. Schooling is also an issue that needs addressing; the levels of basic education are minimal and further education almost entirely absent. Those very few Romani people that can gain an education and find themselves in employment often choose to remove themselves from the community and not to disclose their heritage as Romani people at all. They become divorced from their past and are lost to the community as positive role models and examples. Addressing this educational disadvantage in the Sulukule community could begin to tackle some of these problems and provide the opportunity for individuals develop as productive and engaged citizens of the city and the country.

No other Romani community in the world has the cultural inheritance that stems from the long, continuous past that is part of Sulukule, this area is the very heart of the emergence of Romani people in the "Egyptians" that arrived from the east in the eleventh-century. It is an important heritage for all Romani people throughout the world, and as such we are asking for your support in helping us maintain and improve that heritage, in renewing and regenerating the area. The "long march west" for the Romani people begins with their arrival here and the coming together of different elements that formed the very first "Egyptians". To achieve the recognition of this importance and to secure the future of the Sulukule community and help preserve its past, we ask you to send us messages of support as individuals and organizations of Romani people, and people concerned with improving their condition and circumstances. We ask that all of those who work with Romani communities, helping and supporting them in the continuing process of achieving equality and reaching our potential, recognize our need for support and encouragement in presenting our case against the removal and destruction of our homes and lives, and help us improve both.

We invite you to attend a press conference about the situation where we can speak in person and bring you into our community to see for yourselves the problems and the potential that exists. The event is scheduled for 12.00 on the 28.06.06, in the vicinity of the Edirne Kap on the land walls of Istanbul. If you are unable to be there, please send your messages of support to us so that we may share these with others.

Thank you.

Greetings in the Names of the Most High, Najis devleske!
Akharimata sa Chovihanos thaj Chovihani! (Calling all Holymen and Holywomen!)

My name is Ricardo, I am a painter & Musician and generally a lover of life, I live in Miami Florida USA and I do a radio show on Gypsy music.
My show airs on the FM in miami and also via the internet on 123radio.com worldwide, we have a large listening audience from all around the world and I would like to encourage anyone to take the opportunity of Radio time.
To make mention of any topics that relate to the Romani people (the beauty and the struggle).
I think that It is a very rare opportunity to have a voice for the Roma on the Radio, in a time where there still exists a bad attitude towards the Roma and also that there is now surfacing a little acceptance to this beautifull culture. Please help me to bring awareness to the people, so as to encourage equal rights, Justice and a generally favorable attitude to this beautiful culture.
My goal is to bring awareness to the general population about the romani people's stuggle and also to create a greater repect for the roma people by exposing to others and to the Roma this beautiful music and message.

Najis tuke!
Kushti Bok!
