Re: I THOUGHT THE WORD "GYPSY" WAS POLITICALLY INCORRECT
Fri, September 12, 2008 - 9:16 PMYeah it's tantamount to the "N Word"
I often wonder if people will be looking back in twenty years time, seeing us as we do previous generations that thought other such derogatory terms were acceptable.
That said - the word "gypsy" does apparently come from "egyptian", which was what the Roma claimed to be in order to garner safe passage upon first arriving in Europe. So it's originally a self-applied term - almost a joke - the negative connotations have come over the years as a result of gadji intolerance, rather than being a word made up by gadji.
Also - unless I'm mistaken (happens all the time), 'Sinti' is a particular branch/blood line/set of clans, rather than a general term.
p.s. most of this is not my opinion, but that of the _generally_ accepted research.. a lot of it's still disputed in academic circles..

Re: I THOUGHT THE WORD "GYPSY" WAS POLITICALLY INCORRECT
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 11:00 AMIt seems that there are no hard and fast rules. E.g., in the excellent liner notes of Kal's CD, the word Gypsy is used by the musicians to describe themselves and their work. Given that, I am inclined to assume that it is not necessarily terrible to use the term Gypsy music. -

Re: I THOUGHT THE WORD "GYPSY" WAS POLITICALLY INCORRECT
Fri, December 12, 2008 - 12:24 PMI was under the same impression. I know I have "gypsy" ancestors in my family, but no one knows the tribe. It seems to be like being related to Native Americans....sometimes, the tribe is not known.....

Re: I THOUGHT THE WORD "GYPSY" WAS POLITICALLY INCORRECT
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 9:00 PMbut that's like saying "hip-hop guys use the 'n' word, so it's okay for me..."
which, as far as I know, is still untrue.

Re: I THOUGHT THE WORD "GYPSY" WAS POLITICALLY INCORRECT
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 1:37 AM... ask a gypsy ! In Bulgaria last year, some wag let it out to the gypsies that the EU had "banned"
their name and they had to be called Rom from now on ... there were protests, many said: "We are gypsies !... "
"we never heard of these rom !" Of course the eleven educated gypsies in Bulgaria who like to keep company
with foreigners, get visas and money from abroad provided by the "noble savage" movement must have been
left looking at their shoes...
What about me ? I'll call a gypsy anything he wants out of simple consideration ... In most parts of the world,
the sort of intellectual constipation known as "political correctness" is considered an unaffordable,
incomprehensable and silly luxury.

Re: I THOUGHT THE WORD "GYPSY" WAS POLITICALLY INCORRECT
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 9:02 PMsee my post above - this is an inaccurate factoid - it even appeared in "Gypsy Caravan", but it's misleading in its lack of truthiness :) -

Tue, August 18, 2009 - 6:03 AMKeili....what is inaccurate....that the word "Gypsy" is politically incorrect, or that the word "Gypsy" came from people associating the Rom with Egypt???

Re: I THOUGHT THE WORD "GYPSY" WAS POLITICALLY INCORRECT
Fri, October 2, 2009 - 11:42 PMThe term "Gypsy" is NOT the correct term for the minority. Rom or Roma would be prefered.

Re: I THOUGHT THE WORD "GYPSY" WAS POLITICALLY INCORRECT
Sat, October 3, 2009 - 7:41 PMWould be preferred by whom, exactly? Politically correct non-Gypsies?
I'm with Sasho on this one ... It seems like there are a lot of Gypsies out there who are unfamilair, suspicious, or downright derisive of this term "Roma." I've heard the term used frequently enough in Turkey (as well as others), but not so much in Bulgaria or Macedonia.
Why are non-Gypsies / non-Roma telling them what they are supposed to call themselves?
